The Cooper River Yacht Club will offer a Free Boating Safety Course during the summer of 2008. This course is sponsored in part by a grant from I Boat New Jersey. The basic boating safety course content is developed from proven source material available from US Sailing and the American Red Cross. The material is designed to teach individuals how to handle small craft safely. The small craft utilized for the course will be row boats, canoes, kayaks and sailboats. The course work follows a proven formula of classroom instruction and on-the-water instruction.
Participation is limited to qualified kids between the ages of 11 and 15 from the city of Camden, NJ. Youth associations based in Camden are encouraged to arrange group times for the boat safety course and to recommend students for other times. Groups and students must provide transportation to and from the course. Students must meet specific requirements to enroll in this course. Each student must either be recommended by a school or youth organization. Each must be able to swim and must provide documentation (note from a certified life guard) regarding his or her swimming skills. This note must be included with the application. Each student must be able to swim 50 yards in a life guard monitored swimming pool.
