 Mid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Association

Junior Regatta

of the 2016 South Jersey Summer Series

On Thursday, June 30, 2016, CRYC will host the first Mid Atlantic Yacht Racing Association Junior Regatta of the 2016 South Jersey Summer Series of sailing events for youth sailors.  At this event, sailors ages 9 through 18 will compete in the following sailing classes: Club 420, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Opti, and Sunfish.

This event draws youth sailors and their families from all over southern and coastal New Jersey.  Last year, Cooper River Yacht Club hosted 95 boats and 109 youth sailors for the 2015 MAYRA Junior Regatta. The first race is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. and sailing will continue throughout the day.  The community is invited to come out and watch the competition which will be visible from both sides of the entire length of Cooper River Park.   CRYC is pleased to announce that this year, the regatta is “going green” to achieve a Clean Regattas Certification from “Sailors for the Sea” by implementing Clean Regatta Best Practices to reduce environmental impact and increase awareness of the effect of pollution on our waterways.

A big “Thank You” to this year’s sponsors: Quantum Sails, Zim Sailing, Harken, Zhik, and Collie Sails,

The Cooper River Yacht Club youth sailing team, comprised of students ages 9-18, competes in numerous local and regional regattas throughout the spring and summer sailing season, including the multi-day United States Sailing Association Regional Junior Olympics.  The members of the CRYC Sail Team hail from towns in Camden, Burlington and Gloucester Counties and many of them learned to sail at Cooper River Yacht Club.

Cooper River Yacht Club Junior Race Team

The mission of the Cooper River Yacht Club (CRYC) Junior Race Team is to develop the next generation of sailors who will represent CRYC at area youth races and may become future club sailing instructors and adult members.

The youth learn to sail program attracts a large number of youth from the community.  Often these students come from families where no one knows how to sail, let alone owns a boat or is a member of a yacht club.  Some of these students would like to continue sailing after they have completed their sailing classes and the CYRC Junior Race Team is designed to help them successfully transition from being a “student” to being a “sailor” by providing coaching and racing opportunities at regattas as a youth team.  This allows the team members to improve their skills and confidence sailing under different conditions including the Jersey shore.   CRYC Junior Race Team also serves as a visible presence for CRYC at all regattas that we participate in.

Membership: The members of the CRYC Junior Race Team will consist of no less than five youth sailors whom satisfy the following:

No younger than 9 years of age and no older than 18 years of age

Junior, regular, and family members of the CRYC

Additional Community Sailing membership required if a given sailor must use a club boat when participating in practices and/or regattas)

Practices:  Team practices will be scheduled on weekday afternoons during the summer with the team coach.

Regattas: The team will compete in the MAYRA youth midweek series. Additional regattas may be added if the Coach determines that there will be sufficient participation to justify attendance.

Race Team Fees:  Fees will be determined each spring by the board of the CRYC and the fees will be less for sailors using their personal boat in practices and regattas instead of the club sailboats.  The fees will cover most team expenses such as the coach’s costs and wages, gasoline for the CRYC powerboat during practices and regattas, and gasoline to trailer the powerboat and club sailboats to regattas.  Each team member must pay the small regatta entry fee for each event and this fee may also include a regatta shirt and lunch.
