The Fall 2013 Maritime Paddling staff provides canoe and kayak instruction as an after school program on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Paddling is a wet sport and the paddling sessions at the yacht club are limited to six sessions due to the colder water and weather in October. The sessions at the yacht club are preceded by two paddling lectures at the yacht club. Paddling includes uses the canoes and then the kayaks. Throughout the paddling class, they learn safety and rescue skills such as the canoe to canoe rescue.
Jim Greenfield assists on the powerboat for both the sailors and paddlers, a position requiring excellent boat rescue skills and local knowledge of the Cooper River Yacht Club.
Aaron has been an ACA certified kayak instructor for 14 years and has been enthusiastically kayaking and canoeing for many more years. Aaron has been teaching paddling at the CRYC with Looie Vorhees since 2011. He also teaches paddling at the Philadelphia Canoe Club, guides and teaches for Hidden River Outfitters on the Schuylkill river and most recently taught paddling to campers at Camp Daydreams near Rochester New York. When not paddling Aaron enjoys sailing and racing his Flying Scot at Lake Nockamixon and works as a research technician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Looie has been paddling canoes and kayaks for many years in all kinds of water from meandering streams to whitewater rivers. She also enjoy rafting, stand-up boarding and wilderness canoe tripping. As an American Canoe Association certified instructor, she has been teaching canoeing and kayaking in both flatwater and whitewater for the past 12 years. She enjoys sharing her love of paddling with the students. She is currently the training director at Philadelphia Canoe Club and she teaches many classes for them. In addition, she teaches for the Maritime Program at Cooper River Yacht Club, camp counselors in Hunterdon County and private classes throughout the summer. She spends many days on the water and paddle year-round from Canada to Florida.
Jim learned to sail as a child in his father's boat and has over the last 62 years owned and raced a variety of sailboats ranging from 11 to 24 feet. He has also raced and worked as a paid hand on several ocean-going sailboats up to 41 feet and delivered them up and down the east coast as needed. He is twice Past Commodore and a life member of Cooper River Yacht Club. He taught sailing at CRYC for two years in the mid '80s. He has been on the club's Race & Rescue committee for about the last 25 years and holds a Boating Safety Certificate from the Marine Services Bureau of the New Jersey State Police. He has also owned two outboard motorboats over the years. Jim retired from the boat business in 2004 but is still active in the club.
