COOPER RIVER YACHT CLUB (CRYC)

CODE OF CONDUCT OUTDOOR SCHOOL

(Mandatory Review and Signatures Required)

CRYC offers you the chance to learn to boat and enjoy the Cooper River Park. While it is in our intention for sailors to have fun, it is imperative that there be some restrictions on behavior. The primary reason for this is safety. Most rules directly or indirectly address safety issues.  Cooperation related to these guidelines and rules is necessary.     To participate in this outdoor school, you must follow the guidelines and rules.  Any student, who is unwilling to participate in the program activities, will be sent home. Parents will be contacted.

There are some guidelines for you to follow during the fall outdoor school:

 1.       Work hard to improve your paddling and sailing skills.  Everyone wants to help you learn to row, canoe, kayak, and sail.
 2.       Be a team player - get along with your classmates and accept all assigned boating and science partners.
 3.       Listen, ask questions, and watch others to see how you can improve your boating skills.
 4.       Respect your instructors, fellow students, and the yacht club members at all times.
 5.       Ask your instructors for help as needed.  Fifty per cent of the outdoor school curriculum is environmental education.
 6.       Please let everyone take a turn with all the different jobs during the environmental science class.
 7.       Cooperate with everyone; particularly instructors, classmates and yacht club members.
 8.       If another student does not follow these guidelines, please help them follow these guidelines.
 9.       If you cannot follow instructions, you should not participate in the outdoor school.

You should be able to remember a series of instructions that are divided into four or five steps.
10.      Do not play dodge ball or other ball games before, during, or after class.  This is a boating and science class and it is not a games class.
11.      Provide honest and complete answers to questions. Wait your turn to answer questions.
12.      Learn and accept the responsibilities when you are using boats and attending science class. Do not let your canoe/kayak or sailboats hit other boats or contact the dock with uncontrolled speed.  When you are in science class, you should not be watching boats and wishing you were in boating class.

13.    Limit your conversations to topics relating to boating and science during class.

These rules  must be followed at all times:

 1.       The possession of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal substances at any time will result in immediate expulsion from the program.
 2.       No weapons, knives, or sharp objects of any kind are permitted.
 3.       Wear a lifejacket when near the water, on the dock or when in boat.  It should be the right size, and be properly adjusted and securely fastened.
 4.       Safety first.  Unsafe behavior on or near the water is prohibited.  Listen and follow instructions.
 5.       Do not operate power equipment or powerboats.  Do not sit on the powerboats.
 6.       Do not operate or touch the boat hoist (electric motor).
 7.       Keep your hands to yourself.  Do not touch or push other students.
 8.       Rude language, profanity, and bad comments are not allowed.
 9.       Do not fight. Do not throw rocks.
10.      Treat everyone fairly regardless of gender, ethnic origin, race, religion or sexual orientation.
