HomeOutdoor School Letter for Parents

Welcome to the 2011 Fall Outdoor School at the Cooper River Yacht Club

Envrionmental education about the Cooper River, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, and sailing will be taught at the Cooper River Yacht Club in Collingswood, NJ.  Cooper River is a calm, enclosed body of water with no dangerous currents and no powerboat traffic.  The club is located in the Cooper River Park on South Park Drive in Collingswood and this park is part of the Camden County Park System.

This class involves both water activities in various boats and classroom  and outdoor activities in environmental education relating to the Cooper River.  Most class sessions will be divided so there will be about 50% environmental education and 50% boating (sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and/or rowing).  This may be adjusted due to weather.  No classes are canceled due to bad weather.  The students will use the indoor classroom

The club will provide appropriate lifejackets to all students during class sessions.

You will have on-the-water instruction in either canoeing, rowing, or sailing on the first day of class and it is necessary for you come to the yacht club prepared to go on the water everyday.

You must wear old sneakers with laces to class everyday.  No sandals or open-toed shoes are allowed at the yacht club.   You must being a complete change of clothing with a second pair of old sneakers to class every day.  You will also need to always bring a jacket to class.  Rain or cold weather will NOT cancel the class.

An eyeglass strap is recommended for eye glasses.

You will need to bring a jacket to class every day.  Since it may start raining when you are boating, this jacket should be water-resistant.  Also, you will need this jacket since the temperature may change during the class session.

There are clean restrooms at the Cooper River YC.

Do not bring any sugary or carbonated beverages to Cooper River YC.  You should bring a plastic, refillable bottle with water.

Do not bring any snacks or food without the approval by the instructors and you should bring enough to share with the entire class.

Keep your hands to yourself!  Also, anything in your hands such as a hose or rope should not be used to make physical contact with another student. No splashing.

Canoeing and sailing are cooperative activities.  You should always help the other students and instructors during class.

Do not bring electronics such as i-pods, cell phones, electronic games, and music players.

EVERYONE MUST HAVE A LARGE, CLEAN, DRY CLOTH TOWEL EVERY DAY.
